Some humans spend their entire life looking for Heaven. Others spend the same amount of time running from Hell.

Dean Winchester has been there, has done that. He knows that Hell is as bad as it seems, but that Heaven isn’t all that great either.

He feels regret as he glances down at the former angel that’s fast asleep, resting his head against Dean’s shoulder, hands clinging to Dean as if his very life is depending on Dean’s existence. It’s hard to fall asleep, even on a comfortable memory foam mattress, when you’re constantly reminded of one of the most terrible crimes that you’ve committed in life.

Dean stole an actual angel from Heaven; a horrible thing to do.

But when Castiel snuggles closer in his sleep, mumbling Dean’s name, Dean feels less guilty. Heaven and Hell don’t always mean that much in the grand scheme of things, not when love is involved.

Dean wants to believe that they’re good as they are, right here, precisely in the middle.

Once upon a time, Castiel stole a human from Hell. Not that much later, Dean stole an angel from Heaven in return.

Dean smiles despite himself when Cas sighs happily, hiding his face against Dean’s neck. It’s then that Dean knows that they’re not messing with fate. They’re merely keeping the balance.
